One of my favorite movie lines comes from the great western, The Magnificent Seven. Steve McQueen’s character is asked why they would come to defend a small town against tremendous odds. His reply is something like; “It’s like the guy who took off all his clothes and jumped naked into a bed of cactus. I asked him why he did it and he said it seemed like a good idea at the time.”
Leaders take the first step. That doesn’t mean they are reckless or do things without thinking, but rather when they are convinced it’s time to take action, they do. They move when others are watching, waiting or encouraging someone else to do the task. Leaders may misstep, they may fall, or they may not end up with a good decision after all. But when it is time to move, they move. Many people stand around observing and reporting. They can look at a situation, then try to coerce others into action. Leaders don’t push others to act if they are unwilling. Leaders will take the risk themselves instead of putting someone else in harm’s way.
Great leaders facilitate action. They take the first step. Great leaders don’t take action to brag, to benefit themselves or receive glory. They act because it is right, necessary and best for all involved. They step up and they step out. They facilitate those around them to greater actions. They see themselves as serving the greatest need, not seeking the greater glory. Action-oriented leaders, who only act for their own glory, are not leaders. They are selfish manipulators looking to gratify their own desires at the expense of others.
Great leaders are action-oriented and facilitate the actions of those around them.
