Making What Can Be

DSN9158-2-LLeaders lead. An easy enough statement. But somehow the thought had been given that leaders somehow see into the future and then go there with others always following them. That leaders are visionaries that can see into the future with magical powers to create.

Leaders don’t create the future. To create means to make something out of nothing. But everything is made, not created. Even an original idea has the germ of history and experience in it. A new thought is not created, but is made from the history and understanding of the innovator. A new product may have never been seen or thought of before, but is then made from ingredients that already existed.

This may seem like semantics, but it is important to realize that leaders do not have some special power to look into the future; but rather the ability to make the future. It may seem like a small difference, but the important thing to note is that it can be more a matter of sensitivity than special ability. The future is not relegated to those with special powers, but rather to those who look around to what is presently available and take it to the next level.

Leadership is not about creating a future, but rather having the insight to take what is and to make what can be.
